Introduction

I discovered the wonderous world of podcasts about a year ago and I’ve been hooked ever since! For those of you who don’t know what a podcast is – it is basically a digital audio file that you can listen to on a device of your choice. Podcasting has really taken off in the past year (thanks COVID) and there is a smorgasbord of content out there for you to consume.

They are such a great way to learn about the world beyond our own four walls and they are extremely convenient. Listen in the car, on a walk, in the gym or whilst you cook dinner. You can learn just about anything from a podcast.

As a junior doctor, I thought I would share my three favourite podcasts that I found helpful during my intern and resident years. I still listen to them today and I’d like to share them with you. Here you go!

Where to Listen?

You can find podcasts almost anywhere including SpotifyGoogle PodcastsApple Podcasts or other free apps like PlayerFM or Castbox.

Podcast #1 – Junior Doctors Corner

This is (in my opinion), the #1 podcast for Junior Doctors. It was created by Dr Dana Phang, an Australian doctor, when she was a resident medical officer. The aim of the podcast is to cover topics relevant to junior doctors to help them survive and thrive in medicine. It covers everything from locuming to salary packaging to non-clinical careers in medicine. I’ve been a subscriber for a year now and absolutely love the content on this podcast.

Dr Dana Phang is a GP registrar who works in Australia. She is passionate about supporting junior doctors survive and thrive in their careers. Dana started the podcast as a way to share her experiences as a junior doctor.

Episodes to Date: 50 (as of 21st April 2020)

Episode Frequency: 1-2 episodes per month

  1. The topics are very relevant to junior doctors (and often things we should talk about more)
  2. The guests on the show come from a variety of traditional and non-traditional medical careers. Hearing about how they got to where they are today is   and its really interesting to find out how they got to where they are today
  3. Dana has a great, inquisitive interview style which makes for an easy, informative and enjoyable listen
  4. Best of all, Junior Doctor’s Corner is not just a podcast, is a supportive community of junior doctors around Australia (and the world).

Podcast #2 – Onthewards

This is the original podcast for junior doctors, originally debuting in 2014. This podcast covers everything from applying to different medical specialties to medical leadership to financial wellbeing as a junior doctor. There is also an accompanying website (onthewards.org) which has a great number of resources and articles written by health professionals. I remember trawling through this website as a medical student before I was about to start my internship. It really is a fantastic resource!

Dr James Edwards is an Emergency Medicine Consultant (FACEM) and passionate medical educator (MMedEd). He has long been involved in prevocational training in NSW and was also the Chair of the Sydney University Pre-internship (PRINT) block in 2012. He also as a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Sydney.

Podcast #3 – Scrubbed In

Scrubbed In is a podcast by two junior doctors (Dr A Rahyead and Dr A Choudhury) in the UK who discuss everything from medical school to life as a junior doctor to building healthtech startups. This is a great holistic podcast that goes beyond the wards and the day-to-day life of being a doctor. The guys interview some incredibly talented doctors who have flourished in non-traditional careers (there’s even a medical student who went to work for Google!). If you’re searching for some inspiration in medicine, this is the podcast to listen to!
