One Line Summary

Book Summary

I love to read! But after a long, hard day’s work, I am often unable to find the mental capacity to open a heavy fiction book or read another self-help book about how I should be waking up at 4am and optimising my daily routine.

That’s why I love 488 Rules for Life, as well as the sequel, More Rules for Life

It’s funny, an easy page turner and will either have your laughing or nodding your head in agreement with the “rules” Kitty has postulated.

Writing Style & Design

488 Rules for Life  is a short, to-the-point, honest and hilarious selection of rules for society to live by. If you’ve ever watched Kitty Flanagan on TV or perform a stand up comedy routine, you will have an appreciation for her dry, witty sense of humour. This book is no different.

What I Learnt from this Book:

  1. Don’t take yourself (or life) too seriously. There’s always something laugh about.
  2. Flush. Pause. Check is a great rule which more of us should probably live by.
  3. Lists and rules and lists of rules, make for great reading
  4. Read the books you like. The ones that make your laugh / smile / cry (whatever you want to do). It doesn’t have to be a Number 1 bestseller or a classic fiction book from the 1900s.

My Favourite Rules

Rule 19:

“Flush. Pause. Check.”

Rule 26:

“Cushions are not spiritual advisors.”

Rule 188:

“Never propose to someone in public. “

And if Rule 188 does happen, there’s always Rule 189:

“And if someone proposes to you in public, say yes (and then explain kindly in private if the answer is no)

And my personal favourite, Rule 447:

“Lower your expectations, that way you’ll never be disappointed.”
