Book Summary

If you are going to read one book about the COVID-19 pandemic, let it be this one!

This is the first book to tell the full story of the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of a doctor working behind the frontline.

Dr Dominic Pimenta is a Cardiology Registrar working in the NHS in the UK. Duty of Care recounts his first-hand experiences working in one of the NHS’s hardest hit areas on the COVID-19 frontline.

Dr Pimenta shares his account of the harrowing effect that COVID-19 had on the NHS and the British population. He shares stories of the early days of the pandemic, when the health response was far from robust and people were hesitant to wear masks on public transport. He shares the story of how the pandemic unfurled and inundated the NHS. Amongst all the chaos, he showcases the remarkable ability of the the healthcare system and its heroic workers to adapt to the circumstances and ultimately, save lives.

Writing Style & Design

Duty of Care is intense, gripping and hard to put down! It is such a personal and passionate account of how the COVID-19 pandemic unraveled to cause widespread destruction and devastation across the UK.

Dr Pimenta shares his raw and honest views on the COVID-19 pandemic and how early warning signs were ignored by health authorities. He shares the panic and anxiety of working with a completely unknown virus that has the potential to cause death. His writing (and speaking) style is informative, engaging and to-the-point. He expertly navigates readers through the unraveling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing healthcare crisis.

What I Learnt from this Book:

  1. The heroic efforts of healthcare staff in the NHS (and around the world) to adapt their clinical care to combat the pandemic has been truly remarkable
  2. The early warning signs that COVID-19 had the potential to become a pandemic
  3. The power of hindsight makes me wonder, “what would we have done differently?”

Quotes & Excerpts

This honest summary:

“We weren’t prepared, we weren’t listened to, but together we fought it.”

The real and raw risk:

“I reflect that if we are going to be asked to risk our lives, the least we can expect is to be treated like people.”

The hope:

“I pray that by the time you read this a vaccine is widely available.”
